Searle,

Some of the alleged grievances are pretty lame. Surely the Afghans do not hold against us our help in delivering them from a horrendous Soviet occupation 11 years ago. Bin Laden is angry because we sent soldiers to Saudi Arabi to save the country from being overrun by Iraqi tanks. Quite frankly, it's the biggest mistake Saddam ever made--not running his tanks into Saudi Arabia as soon as Kuwait City was occupied and preparing the Saudi oil fields for the torch.

With these kinds of fantasized slights, there is no logical way to appease. Even the Palestinian question is a non-question. Israel cut the Palestinians a good deal. If they would have been intelligent enough to play it cool and show Israel they could be be a peaceful partner in the region, they would likely have gotten much more from Israel in future negotiations. But no, they decided that the gun and a bullet was worth more than a million words. Not the other way around.

Some say that we are creating the seeds for future terrorism. But I doubt that. I doubt most Afghans have any use for a Taliban that currently has them subsisting on the lowest caloric intake of any people in the world. Tons of food, blankets and medicine are ready to flow into the country. And the women in Afghanistan will love us. They will be graduated from cattlehood.

And one other thought. We drill in Alaska, off the coast of Florida and California--anywhere we have the energy while at the same time going on a national campaign to perfect the fuel cell for cars and for buildings. Then we embargo OPEC. Screw them. Then we can go isolationist in peace.
