It's worth noting the other firms mentioned in both the NY Times article and the Fox O'Reilly show which did not cut off salaries so quickly suffered far smaller losses in terms of both human life and ongoing revenue generating abilities. For Lutnick to continue paying salaries when most revenue sources for Cantor have been destroyed would jeopardize the firm's ability to survive.
I thought the NY times article contained precious little real information-it merely stated that payroll had been cut off and many family members were suspicious of Lutnick's commitment to them.
The Fox show showed a perhaps unavoidable human side to the tragedy. The family member who complained that no representative of Cantor attended the funeral-with 700 to attend, and a firm hanging on the precipice of destruction, is that really so surprising. Even Guiliani has admitted he could not attend all the funerals of NYC servicemen, whose total losses were approximately HALF of Cantor's.
Lutnick before 9/11 was not a very nice man, and it remains to be seen how deep his commitment to the survivor's families will remain in the difficult months and years to come. But lets keep in mind the terrible circumstances he is operating in, and how he must balance both the immediate needs of the families with the need to preserve the firm which could provide ongoing support to those surviving the victims of September 11th.
It seems to me to be far too early to assess whether Lutnick's efforts will honor those who perished; but having seen his TV appearances and studied the Cantor USA website, I believe his intentions remain honorable.
