Iran Says U.S. Strikes on Afghanistan Unacceptable
October 7, 2001 4:58 pm EST

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran said on Sunday that U.S. military strikes on neighboring Afghanistan were "unacceptable" and would hurt innocent Afghan civilians, a Foreign Ministry spokesman told Reuters.
Iran, while condemning the September 11 attacks in the United States, has said any response should be led by the United Nations, not Washington.

"I express my concern about this vast operation in Afghanistan and this attack which would result in the loss of life among civilians," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi. "It is not acceptable."

"This attack has been carried out regardless of world public opinion, especially opinion in the Islamic world," he said.

Asefi stopped short of condemning the U.S. attacks.

"I did not condemn it, it was conditionally condemned," he said.

Iran is concerned that a conflict between two of its sworn enemies, the United States and Afghanistan's ruling Taliban militia, could spill over its eastern border.

Tehran has ordered its armed forces to seal its 900-km (560-mile) border with Afghanistan to stop a possible flood of refugees joining some two million Afghans already in the country.

Iran's defense minister said last week Iranian forces would "confront" any U.S. aircraft that strayed into Iran's airspace.
