the very existence of a successful secular Turkey provides credible evidence that a separation of religion and state IS workable in the Islamic world

Perhaps, but we must remember that Ataturk forced the division with a strong hand, outlawing Arab writing and romanizing the alphabet, making the sitar and traditional head dress illegal, etc. Not unlike the way the Taliban have imposed their version of Islamic rule on the Afghans, though less extreme and bloody (unless you ask the Armenians). That said, after 2-3 generations, the Western portion of Turkey can be said to be, arguably, the most successful of Moslem countries to have divided church and state, though they still need to maintain a strong domestic military presence.
