(Nasdaq: JNPR), a leading provider of next-generation Internet Protocol (IP) infrastructure systems, today announced that RedIRIS has selected Juniper Networks M-series routers for the deployment of the first phase of a high-speed, ultra-reliable multiservice IP network. RedIRIS is the National Academic and Research Network for more than 250 research and education facilities in Spain. Overseen by the Ministry of Science and Technology, RedIRIS provides IP services over a national network infrastructure to more than one million people in 40 cities that are connected to the high-speed IP network. These locations primarily host universities and research and development centers, and additionally host hospitals and other public organizations. "The new deployment of the M-series routers serves two main goals. We can upgrade the capacity of our current Internet backbone from 155 Mbps to high-speed 2.5 Gbps, allowing faster transport of latency-sensitive voice, video and data services. RedIRIS is also depending on this far-reaching network to provide a wide variety of smart IP services, tailor-made to the requirements of our advanced research and development customers. Juniper Networks systems play a vital role in the plans for advancing our IP infrastructure and achieving application-specific goals," said Esther Robles, network manager at RedIRIS. The initial phase of the rollout includes deployment of Juniper Networks M20 and M40 Internet backbone routers in eight cities throughout Spain. The major areas will be connected with OC-48c/STM-16 links. RedIRIS also plans to provide a robust multiservice network using the newly enhanced Internet backbone, deploying IP multicasting and DiffServ class of service to deliver premium services. "We are leveraging advanced IP services to support the development of high-performance distributed computing (GRID applications) for workgroups using video and voice conferencing, distance learning, and online training for thousands of users with many different requirements. It is crucial for us to meet our customers' expectations through a high-performance, feature-rich, and scalable infrastructure. Based on our testing, Juniper Networks solutions proved that they could offer the best software and hardware reliability to help us meet these expectations," added Robles. To ensure high-capacity and advanced IP services at a Pan-European level, several initiatives are underway at RedIRIS. One particular initiative is a partnership with DANTE, a provider of high-quality IP network services to the European Research and Education community, which is also a customer of Juniper Networks. RedIRIS will be connected to the Dante/GEANT backbone at 2.5 Gbps (OC-48c/STM-16) in October 2001. Juniper Networks worked closely with its European partner Telindus, which is responsible for the supply, installation, and support of the routing systems. About RedIRIS RedIRIS is the Spanish National Academic and Research Network, funded by the National Plan for R&D and managed at present by the Scientific Research Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas). Since 1988, RedIRIS has provided network infrastructure to Spanish R&D institutions, the number of which has increased continuously since then to reach 250 today. This involves mainly universities and R&D Centres. The services offered by RedIRIS to the Spanish Academic and Research Community, require the support of a basic infrastructure of transport, technologically adapted to the needs of the connected centres. These services are provided in collaboration with other academic networks and other international forums. rediris.es . Ibexx
