It's hard to imagine you "saluting" anything. I believe you confuse "tolerance" with "sameness". While the body politic and our physical bodies tolerate all sorts of foreign influences and may benefit from many, there are limits.

Good medicine can have nasty side effects when the dosage is too high.

It seems to me you are tolerant of just about everything other than the majority.

The only case I know of where flags could not be displayed was the case of a private business and it's corporate policy. Do you feel private businesses cannot set there own policies?

You can argue against the policy without arguing that the business shouldn't be able to make such a policy. The fact that they can make this policy, and that they should not be forcibly prevented from doing so, does not mean it is a good policy or that it should be immune from criticism.

I sure do, X. And you would too, if the policy were that women can only be employed as typists.

The flag-banning was reported in the one firm and in one university (big surprise) that I know of. It likely happened in other cases that I did not see or which were not reported. These two institutions quickly bowed to public pressure, but I would favor a law guaranteeing every American the right to display our country's flag at a place of employment. Exceptions would have to have a real good reason, which most definitely could not be that "it might offend someone" -- the reason give in in the two known cases.

What astounds me is that we are always being cajoled to respect other cultures when we travel and not to insist on forcing American ways upon others. It is taken for granted that we certainly have no right to be "offended" by what we see in these other cultures, most definitely not by the sight of their own flag flying somewhere..

So, when we are in our own homeland, why are we being told that we must be careful not to offend others by displaying our own flag? Who are "these others," and what right do they have to be offended at the mere sight of an American flag ... in America?
