Agreed, Clinton has saud publicly that he was unable to persuade Congress to do more than launch missles all the while Osama and Co. were building their plans of evil against us.

Sad to say, but often tragedy is required before action initiated...

This has ALWAYS been the way with the US.. It requires a Pearl Harbor before we shake ourselves out of our comfortable day-dream and finally realize people want to kill us in massive quantities.

I see a real correlation between the sinking of the Rueben James in April, 1941, and the eventual attack upon Pearl Harbor. We knew that our interests, and neutrality, were being challenged by both Japan and Germany, but it required being smacked by Pearl Harbor to wake us up to the inevitability of the conflict we were facing.

It's also the same with removing military "politicians" and replacing them with warriors who understand how to conduct battle. Most of the "star" combat generals which emerged from WWII were mere colonels in the year Pearl Harbor occurred. Eisenhower was only promoted to colonel in early 1941, and later that year to Brigadier General. Bradley was promoted to Brigadier General in 1941.. Patton, who preceded them in rank by being promoted in 1940.

But what's of particular note is that, despite holding the rank of general, these promotions were "brevet" advances. In other words.. they would hold the rank of general, but held a "permanent" rank usually reflecting that which they held upon promotion. Eisenhower and the rest of these generals were a two star Brevet generals, with permanent ranks of Colonel until well into the war when they replaced retiring Generals who had been pushed aside by their lack of ability.

This is just one example how those understand the art and science of war eventually rise to the top past the politicians who were promoted based upon their political connections. (congress approves all officer promotions).

Thus the old saying about "invention's" mama.

But I still marvel that a plane hit the PENTAGON after the two at the WTC.
