It was reported here that JPM bought 8% of float of HGMCY the other day. Could they now be new long?

JPM is a bullion bank. Thus, they have loaned lots of gold out which others sold to them. So they get to benefit if/when that gold is returned to them, I guess? Who is the counterparty in gold forwards sold by miners? Everybody shorting? Miners shorting? Bullion banks shorting? THis can't happen... Jewellers long gold forwards? Why is everybody short? Can someone explain how this happened?
