I would think that the Russians have many more reasons to help the US (vs remaining neutral)

-NATO membership
-$ support for their economy
-support for their actions against terrorists within their borders (as opposed to the US calling for restraint in the way they are handled)
-future military influence in the region

The fact that the US helped the "other side" in an earlier war can be important, but history is full of enemies becoming allies and vise versa
