RESEARCH ALERT-Digital Lightwave estimate cut
NEW YORK, Oct 3 (Reuters) - ABN AMRO said on Wednesday that it lowered its earnings per share estimates for Digital Lightwave Inc. (NasdaqNM:DIGL - news) after the optical networking products maker said it expects a third quarter loss.

On Oct. 2, Digital Lightwave said softness in telecommunications spending and a weakened economy will lead it to post a third-quarter after tax loss of $2.7 million to $3 million, 9 to 10 cents per share.

ABN AMRO analyst Jung Ho Pak said the company's forecast of third-quarter sales to $8.3 million to $8.7 million is 73 percent below the previous revenue estimate.

Pak lowered earnings per share estimates to 36 cents from $1.00 in 2001 and to a loss of 10 cents from a profit of $1.15 for 2002, the analyst said in a research note.

``Demand for communications test equipment could be at further risk as the economic uncertainty, exacerbated by recent events, paints a cloudy picture for the second half of 2001 and the first half of 2002,'' Pak said.

ABN AMRO is lowering Digital Lightwave's rating to ``hold'' from ``add.'' In July, the firm downgraded the stock from ``buy.''
