Lola- I believe that there's a larger conspiracy amongst arab leaders and bin laden than they want everyone to know about. If it's true and not just a touch of paranoia, killing bin laden insures that this knowledge never comes to light.

If they were so hot on having him killed, why didn't they do it, a long time ago?
It would have been a heckuva lot easier for them to do it, than us.

In the back of my mind, I am getting an itchy feeling that they are scared that the truth will come out, and now that we apparently mean business, they're starting to worry about their own necks.

Re: Finishing the job

There has been no shortage of armchair generals second-guessing the wisdom of U.S. policy during the Gulf War but consider the following. In 1990-91 the Cold War, though clearly in its endgame, was not yet over. The Soviet Union still existed and Boris Yeltsin was still a figure largely unknown in the west. Nobody could say with certainty whether a dying Soviet empire would pass into history peaceably as thankfully did occur. During the Cold War the overriding priority for U.S. Defense policy was to oppose the Soviets while at the same time doing nothing that might lead to direct military conflict between the two superpowers. Given the U.S.-Soviet experience in the Cuban Missile Crisis this was a very understandable goal. So while it is easy to philosophize about what the U.S. "should" have done in 1991 the reality is that if a march on Bagdad might have helped trigger World War III then Bush Sr. was correct to disengage once the primary military objective of liberating Kuwait had been accomplished.

Fast forward to today and it is clear that the world has changed. The Cold War is truly over and the world can take great comfort that the U.S. and Russia are no longer locked in a struggle which could end the human race and that presidents Bush and Putin appear to be working jointly to address the global terrorist threat. It is precisely this type of cooperation which will guarantee that civilization will prevail in this conflict and that can form the basis for a follow-on global "Marshall Plan" to eradicate forever the root causes of this cancer.
