It's dangerous work. I once lived in a town where they made cedar shakes. You wouldn't believe the number of men walking around with one, two, three or more fingers missing. The way that works: A cedar bolt is split into planks that are roughly twice the thickness of a shake. Then that plank is sawn diagonally into two tapered halves. In the days before OSHA, the shakemaker fed the planks through by hand, which required him to get his fingers very close to the saw. It only took a small mistake to slice off several fingers.

One of the loggers helpers only had one arm. The other had been sliced off when a band broke. Said there was no time to move.
