Intelligence agencies here said the decision to force retirement on the ISI chief was taken under US pressure on the basis of Indian Intelligence reports. The reports established links between Lt Gen Ahmed and Umer Sheikh, who transferred $100,000 into the account of Mohammad Atta, one of the terrorists who led the 11 September attacks in New York and Washington. Lt Gen Ahmed lead the Pakistani team which negotiated with the Taliban. Umer Sheikh, financier for the terrorist attacks in USA, had a close connection with the December 1999 hijacking of the Indian Airlines plane, which was finally taken to Kandahar for negotiations. He was one of the three terrorists who were released by India in exchange for the release of the hostages. The other two were Maulana Masood Azhar and Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar. Intelligence agencies had substantive information that Umer Sheikh had close relation with the former ISI chief. Reports suggested that the ousted chief was a key architect in the IC 814 hijacking. The hijacked aircraft was first taken to Lahore and it was believed that the hijackers were supplied with firearms and ammunition at Lahore before moving to Kandahar. The Intelligence agencies also had records detailing the conversations. The FBI team, which had sought adequate inputs about various terrorists including Sheikh was working on the association between Sheikh and Lt Gen Ahmed. The inputs by India seem to have been satisfactory. Sources said there were enough indications that it was at Gen Ahmed’s instructions that Sheikh had transferred the money into Atta’s account. Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee had told Mr Tony Blair about the specific links between IC-814 hijacking and terrorist attacks in the US. The US ambassador, Mr Robert Blackwill, today had a one-on-one meeting with Mr LK Advani, which lasted over an hour. The US envoy is believed to have briefed Mr Advani about the latest developments in Afganistan and possible scenario of US-Indian cooperation on the issue. Mr Advani reportedly gave him further Intelligence inputs on Jaish-e- Muhammad which Mr George Bush yesterday said would be declared a terrorist organisation and put on the list of banned outfits.
