The Stock and the Ox are legendary, but I spent little time there. I don't remember the Monks Cave; perhaps it was known by another name when I was in Missoula. I left in 1996, and have only visited family since.

My brother-in-law owns a printing business next to the Ox. My Dad used to order sandwiches there. If you ordered roast beef sandwiches to go, the cook hollered "Two married men, for a walk!" You can still get brains and eggs there, I think. It's the only place in my life I ever saw one of those ticker tape machines that used to print out stock trades. Senator/Ambassador Mike Mansfield ate there every chance he got. It's mentioned in "A River Runs Through It."
