And here I was, about to comment that most Moslems in India, other than those in Kashmir, seemed more tolerant and secular than their Arab brethren. I was going to say the Hindu influence, of adopting religion as a matter of personal philosophy rather than a set of rules etched in stone, may have rubbed off on them........but NOOOOOOO!....they just have to prove me wrong ! <g>

Bukhari terms US action as 'terrorism'

The shahi imam of New Delhi's Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari, on Monday lashed out at the United States for bombing Afghanistan, and termed the strikes as an act of "terrorism" and "barbarism".

The imam also supported the Taleban's call for a jihad against America and its allies.

Addressing a congregation in New Delhi, Bukhari said the US had attacked Afghanistan "without showing proof" of Osama bin Laden's involvement in the September 11 strikes on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon.

"It is a barbaric act. It is terrorism," he said in a speech that was punctuated by slogans hailing the Taleban and Laden.

He charged that the US action in Afghanistan had "threatened world peace".

Stating that the attacks had made Muslims around the world, including in India, "restless", Bukhari said that Islam prescribed jihad to protect the community and its interests.

"We support the jihad declared by the Taleban rulers," he said, asking the gathering to "support and implement it bravely".

"What is the fault of the Afghan people? What is the proof that Osama is responsible for the September 11 attacks in the US. If America had the proof, they should have presented it before the world and the Organisation of Islamic Conference," Bukhari said.
