Satcon Up 15% On Bio-, Chemical-Detection System Patent

NEW YORK -- Shares of Satcon Technology Corp. (SATC) shot up as much as 55% Thursday following the company's announcement that it was granted a patent for its biological and chemical detection system.

The detection platform is the result of a project with the U.S. Army that started back in 1999. Satcon's press release Thursday explained that the platform is capable of detected traces of chemical and biological - such as botulism and e-coli - in food and liquids. Most notably, the system is able to work with very small sample sizes and works in "near real time."

Shares recently traded at $7.95, up $2.40 or 43.2%, on volume of 771,200 shares, compared with average volume of 113,472 shares.
