... from contraryinvestor.com - October 4, 2001 ...

... highest 20 percentage up days in the history of the Nasdaq Composite ...

DATE ................. % Move

01/03/01 ............. 14.2 %

12/05/00 ............. 10.5 %

04/05/01 ............. 8.9 %

05/18/01 . ........... 8.1 %

05/03/00 ............. 7.9 %

10/13/00 ............. 7.9 %

10/19/00 .............. 7.8 %

12/22/00 .............. 7.6 %

10/21/87 .............. 7.3 %

04/18/00 .............. 7.2 %

04/25/00 .............. 6.6 %

04/07/00 .............. 6.6 %

06/02/00 ............. 6.4 %

04/10/01 ............. 6.1 %

09/08/98 ............. 6.0 %

12/08/00 ............. 6.0 %

10/03/01 ............. 5.9 %

11/14/00 ........... 5.8 %

10/31/00 ........... 5.6 %

11/24/00 ............ 5.4 %

The 10/21/87 up day can almost be written off as a snap back from a crash episode. The 09/08/98 6% one day affair was really a prelude to the last and final NASDAQ blowoff. But, what these numbers suggest collectively is that one day up moves of 5% or greater in the NASDAQ are, in fact, statistically bearish. With 18 of the top 20 days in NASDAQ history occurring during the greatest bear market in an equity index over a compressed period of time in all of US financial history, what other message could be drawn?
