I meant civil as distinct from military. There are many countries that have far higher rates of military homicide than the U.S. (Civil also includes involuntary as, for example, a child picking up a gun that the father had left armed or a nut case using a gun bought at a gun fair).

As both supporters and detractors agree, a gun is not dangerous - only the person that handles it. I have never had any problems with police or the military - or now air marshals - having guns as they will have been security vetted. A gun license to me is similar to a driving or flying license (planes and autos are not dangerous only the persons handling them).
