I think there is a big difference between EDGE compatible and EDGE equipment. A hillside is compatible with a base station, but until you put one there, it is only a hillside.

About 90% of GSM operators don't even have a license for the UMTS (WCDMA) spectrum. So how will they deploy it?

Not all GSM customers will drop basic phone (voice) service in favor of data/WCDMA services.
