I do believe in prayer to open or expand contact with God so that one who prays can deepen one's spiritual life and discern God's will (not man's will). I think the song God Bless America is a prayer for strength and courage to see ourselves through the current situation. As for praying for a friend who is in an awful way, and asking God to cure them, I do not see that as a selfish act. A selfish act would be the opposite, IMO.
