Not saying that telcos made a good investment by building out their networks (taking into account demand (projected or real) competition, the economy), but incrementally, it costs almost nothing to place an additional strand of fiber in the ground once the trench is open. 90% of the cost of building a network is opening the trench.

From a cost perspective, placing one (two) strand(s) of fiber in the ground at a time to satisfy short term demand makes no sense at all.

Heinz, What's your short term forecast? I see too much bearishness to go down and too bad fundamentals to go up. IMO we'll slowly go down, but very slow, so put buying will not make money.
I like this man's opinion: #reply-16465258 even though I don't care about his 'bands'

The good news is that it will come handy in the future. The bad news are that Telecom has around $350 billion turning into dust. That is twice the S&L debacle in the early 1990.

On top of all that we have around 100 billion in direct damage from Sept. 11 disaster which also may have a 1 to 5 multiplier effect worldwide.

Not a nice picture ............ but paper money will cost almost zero to borrow and inflate us out of trouble ........ or may be not

Heinz; RE>> and of this turned on capacity, only 10% is actually used. <<< It's been a while since I looked
but taht is hard to belive, were did you get the 10%
being used ?
Last year there was such a jam up the whole damm net
near came down ( several parts of it did ) , and most major hubs were running at 140% rated capacity at peak
week day hours.
We were getting brown out's after brown outs , I know it's
a lot better now but 10% of capacity ? They must be
measuring in the middle of the night.
