The opposite would be refusing to pray because you do not believe in God. Even though, there is a hope that the prayer would provide the friend with comfort.

Don't know if I was clear on that.

I think it would be ok to ask God to help all people who are suffering.
Clearly he isn't going to, but at least it is an egalitarian way to frame the request.
