I don't recall ever reading anything about Japan developing an atom bomb. There was a German effort. The Germans, unlike the Japanese, were at the forefront of Physics research before WWII. You can get some idea of how close the Germans got to an atom bomb by checking out haigerloch.de and haigerloch.de . Not exactly Los Alamos, that. In fact, not even close to the famous squash court under Stagg Field.

Re: <Incorrect. Considerably informed sources knew that Japan was being strangled by the blockade, and could very conceivably have fallen without even an invasion, let alone the atomic bombs.>.

Considerably informed sources disagree with that assessment, including those on the ground at the time who were being shot to hell from well-dug-in warriors who had a track record of fighting to the death and marching their pow's to death. Ultimately, the most informed sources who, at the relevant time had all available relevant on-site political, strategic, and historical facts at their disposal in real-time, those who were elected to make the decision, made the best decision they could under the circumstances. Harry Truman was a haberdasher by trade who reflected the values and freedoms of America; not a wild-eyed, world-conquering barbarian. We then greatly assisted in re-building and rehabilitating Japan after WWII.
