All are creatures of God. We are directed to stand in respect when a coffin passes even if the person in it was once our worst enemy. Their Earthly deeds no longer are at issue for us as the person is now in God's hands. What ever is past, is done and best layed to rest with the dead person.

At funerals I pray for three things: God's mercy on the dead person's soul, for the souls of the living and for my personal soul. This is a standard and ritualized when in congregation.

I don't have a problem with this at all. The benefit is to the respectful person(s) performing such prayers. We don't change God's judgement in the process. My problem is when living human's take it upon themselves to forgive the soul of another or condemn it. God and God alone has this role.
