There appears to be a poetic symmetry to all this. The Islamicists want us to remember September 11 the same painful way they do. In turn, we are reminding them of their ignominious defeat in the Battle of Lepanto.
We’ve Been Here Before
October 7 was an Auspicious Day to Strike
By Duncan Maxwell Anderson
FrontPageMagazine.com | October 10, 2001

"A senior Pentagon official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Tomahawk cruise missiles were launched from American and British vessels, including American submarines, in the Arabian Sea.

"This official said targets included air defenses, military communications sites and terrorist training camps inside Afghanistan. ‘This is going to be a prolonged, sustained effort over several days,’ the official said."

The Associated Press

THE SHOOTING has begun. We've seen little, and heard a lot of words since the attacks of Sept. 11, and some commentators have suggested that there have been no American strikes until this past Sunday because President Bush hasn't really known what to do next, against an invisible, perhaps omnipotent enemy.

But listening to the news every hour can be deceptive. In a real military campaign, much of the time, words are issued to mask action. The reality is that Delta Force and British SAS commandos infiltrated Afghanistan within days of Sept. 11 to pinpoint the air strikes that have just begun. The purpose is not to destroy aspirin factories, but to "take out the enemy’s eyes and ears" in preparation for a ground attack. U.S. Army Rangers and 10th Mountain Division troops are ringing the country preparing to roust detachments of Taliban troops from their tunnels.

No doubt the Talibans and their Arab mercenaries are tough. On the other hand, to make Ranger, you have to run a 5:30 mile carrying a 60-lb. pack on your back, followed immediately by a second mile at a 5:50 pace — and be one of the first 50 men to finish the race. Those who qualify get a year's pressure-cooker instruction in weapons, tactics, and hand-to-hand fighting, if they last.

Mountain Division troops can do all that on skis, and live outdoors in any weather for two weeks (or more) without re-supply.

Technology will probably be more important to this conflict than we can now imagine. Satellites and Northern Alliance scouts have probably been mapping the movements of individual donkeys. In short, the experiences of the British and the Soviets in this country may or may not be relevant. This will be an American war.

I'm reminded of the closing of John Keegan's brilliant book Warpaths—Travels of a Military Historian in North America:

There is, I have said, an American mystery, the nature of which I only begin to perceive. If I were obliged to define it, I would say it is the ethos—masculine, pervasive, unrelenting—of work as an end in itself. War is a form of work, and America makes war, however reluctantly, however unwillingly, in a particularly workmanlike way.

Once they have been forced to take up the task of war, Keegan observes, "Americans shoulder the burden with intimidating purpose."

Meanwhile, Osama bin Laden, the Yuppie murderer and drug dealer, seems to have lost a little of his swagger. Trapped in a darkened Afghanistan of his own making, he is no longer declaring that the Americans will not dare come after him, and that the descendants of the Crusaders are soft and impotent. Instead, he is calling on Muslims around the world to come to his assistance. Please. Now.

Like most men from the East, bin Laden is acutely aware of history in a way that puts our ignorance of it to shame. Four hundred and thirty years ago, the Ottoman emperor Selim II pursued the same Islamic imperialism to which bin Laden lays claim today. The Ottoman Turks controlled an army and navy that had conquered Turkey, the Middle East, North Africa, Eastern Europe, and Greece, and were poised to take Italy. Ali Pasha, commander of the Muslim fleet, announced that he would pull down the cross atop St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and replace it with the crescent moon. It was a similar gesture to destroying the World Trade Center.

But before Ali Pasha could carry out his threat, Pope Pius V, an astute diplomat, united squabbling factions from Spain, Venice, and the Papal States to mount a last-ditch resistance—headed by Don John of Austria, the 25-year-old, illegitimate son of the Austrian emperor. On September 17, 1571, although badly outnumbered, Don John led a fleet of ships in search of the Muslim navy and finally met them on October 7 in the Gulf of Lepanto, off the western coast of Greece.

Back in Rome, Pope Pius led processions of the faithful, praying the Rosary for a Christian victory.

Four hours after hostilities commenced, the Ottoman fleet had been destroyed. The Battle of Lepanto – memorialized in G.K. Chesterton’s poem "Lepanto" – was the turning point in the long war to save Europe from the steady march of Islamic conquest.

In thanksgiving, the Pope fixed the date of the naval victory at Lepanto as the Feast of the Holy Rosary. That feast is October 7, the commenced air strikes on Afghanistan.

The campaign against Islamic terrorists may be long. But as the terrorists themselves are well aware, it has begun on an auspicious day for the West.

Then it's time for them to be much less secret and equivocal about it. Especially those who are citizens of this country. If the most they are willing to do is to portray themselves as uninvolved, victimized bystanders, they are missing their defining moment in this nation's history, imho.

Thanks for your post, btw.

What Muslims Don't Tell You
by Abdullah Al Araby
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[As I read this, I have to wonder how the average muslim (in this country particularly) rationalizes it or is able to disassociate himself/herself from it without repudiating Islam itself entirely and unequivocally. My question is, honestly: how DO they solve this problem?]

Women's Rights
Women are inferior to men
"...and women shall have rights similar to the rights against them...but men have a degree over them..." Surah 2:228

Women are less than equal to men in at least two major areas

First, in inheritance: a woman's share is half that of a man. " To the male a portion equal to that of two females..." Surah 4:11
Second, in court witness: the witness of two women equals the witness of one man. "...and if there are not two men, then a man and two women such as you choose, for witness..." Surah 2:282
Women's mind is deficient
Mohammed said, " The witness of a woman is equal to half of that of a man because of the deficiency of the woman's mind" Hadith vol. 3:826

A husband may punish his wife by beating her or abstaining from sexual relations with her
" women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them, refuse to share their beds, beat them. Surah 4:34

Women should veil themselves when they are outside their homes.
" (Women) should cast their outer garments over their persons (when abroad)."Surah 33:59

Sex & Marriage
A man may marry up to four wives at one time
"...Marry women of your choice, two or three or four..." Surah 4:3

A wife is a sex object
" Your wives are as a tilth ( a field to be ploughed ) unto you, so approach your tilth when or how ye will." Surah 2:223

Unnatural sex is allowed
" Narrated Jaber; Jews used to say: If one has a sexual intercourse with his wife from the back , then she will deliver a squint-eyed child ." So this verse was revealed: " Your wives are a tilth unto you; so approach your tilth when or how you will." (whether in a natural or unnatural way). Hadith vol. 6:51

Divorce is allowed
" It may be if he divorced you that Allah will give him in exchange consorts better than you..." Surah 66:5

When a husband has pronounced divorce three times on his wife, she then may not lawfully remarry her husband until she has married and been divorced by another man.
"...so if a husband divorces his wife he cannot after that, remarry her until after she has married another husband, and he has divorced her, in that case there is no blame on either of them if they reunite." Surah 2:230

Human Rights
Islam does not permit freedom of choice regarding religion
"Fight those who believe not in God nor the last day. " Surah 9:29

Islam does not teach the equality of all people
" Ye (Muslims) are the best of peoples, evolved for mankind..." Surah 3:110

Any person who accepts Islam, then later turns away from it will be subject to death.
Mohammed said, "Whoever changes his Islamic religion, kill him." Hadith vol. 9:57

A Muslim may not be killed if he kills an infidel
Mohammed said: "No Muslim should be killed for killing a Kafir (infidel). ".Hadith vol. 9:50

Ethnic cleansing is practiced
Mohammed said to the Jews "The earth belongs to Allah and His apostle, and I want to expel you from this land (the Arabian Peninsula), so, if anyone owns property, he is permitted to sell it. " Hadith vol. 4:392

Why Saudia Arabia does not allow churches to be erected on its soil:
Mohammed's last words were: "Turn the pagans (non-Muslims) out of the Arabian Peninsula." Hadith vol. 5:716

Democracy
No Separation of Church and State
" We have sent down to thee the Book (Quran) in truth, that thou mightest judge between men, as guided by God." Surah 4:105

According to Islam

Stealing is punishable by the amputation of the hands (Surah 5:41)
Adultery is punishable by public flogging (Surah 24:2)
Drinking is punishable by 40-80 lashes (Hadith 8:770)
Resisting Islam, punishable by death, crucifixion or the cutting off of the hands and feet (Surah 5:36)
These rules will be imposed also on non-Muslims in an Islamic State
" If any one desires a religion other than Islam, never will it be accepted of him." Surah 3:85

No opposition party is allowed in an Islamic State
" O ye who believe obey God and the apostle and those charged with authority among you. If you differ in anything among yourselves, refer it to God and His apostle." Surah 4:59

If you don't abide by these laws, you are considered:

An unbeliever (Surah 5:47)
A wrong-doer (Surah 5:48)
A rebel (Surah 5:50)
Violence
Allah orders Muslims in the Quran to terrorize non-Muslims on His behalf
" I will instill terror into the hearts of the unbelievers, smite ye above their necks and smite all their finger-tips of them.It is not ye who slew them; it was Allah." Surah 8:13-17 (See also Surah 8:60 & 9:14)

Mohammed practiced violence to force people into Islam
Mohammed said, "I have been ordered to fight with the people till they say, none has the right to be worshipped but Allah." Hadith vol. 4:196

Mohammed also said, "Know that paradise is under the shades of the swords." Hadith vol 4:73

A Muslim serving Uncle Sam

12.10.2001
By MICHAEL RODDY

USS CARL VINSON - It isn't easy to find the direction to Mecca to say Muslim prayers five times a day on board a United States aircraft carrier launching bombing raids on Afghanistan from the Arabian Sea.
But these days that's the least of Pakistan-born Muhammad's worries.
A 34-year-old aircraft maintenance supervisor, Muhammad is one of a handful of practising Muslims on the USS Carl Vinson.
He is on the team helping to launch airstrikes that pass through Pakistani air space on their way to Afghanistan to punish its Taleban rulers for harbouring Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden, blamed by the US for the September 11 hijack attacks which killed thousands.
A thin, wiry man who wears glasses and hunts down corrosion spots on fighters flying in the muggy, salty sea air, Muhammad said his shipmates had continued to behave towards him "as family" since the attacks, which set off anti-Muslim incidents in the US and elsewhere.
But he is worried about what may be in store for a world now frightened of random killings of civilians, and concerned about instability in the subcontinent where he grew up.
"I can understand their feelings, how they feel - the same as me," Muhammad said of the sentiments among the crew, whose spirits have soared since they began bombing raids to batter Taleban targets in Afghanistan.
"I don't think it's right, what happened. That's not the way to show anything, I mean, killing civilians, four to five thousand people.
"And that was not just Americans anyway. There were 30, 40 countries. That's not the right thing and whoever did it deserves something," he said.
With the bombing taking place in Afghanistan across the border from his native country, Muhammad, more than just about anyone in the crew, is acutely aware of what the US raids could mean for Pakistan and the region.
A revolution in Pakistan, whose leader President Pervez Musharraf has faced violent protests over the US use of Pakistani air space to attack Afghanistan, could cause political trouble for other countries in the region.
"The whole area will be unstable, not just Pakistan, but also India. In India there are more Muslims than Pakistan," Muhammad said.
He is also worried about possible hostility towards Muslims in the US when he returns.
But Muhammad said that for him, America provided hope for the future, and the Pakistan he left behind was beset by problems.
"That's why I ran away and I came to the US. I could not take it any more."
