I think fixing ammonia from the atmosphere is why he got the Nobel Prize. Ironically, it's useful for both fertilizer, and explosives.

Mustard gas is really nasty stuff, though. Perfect for trench warfare, because it's heavy, and dense, so it collects in trenches. Incapacitation is quick, but death is very painful and may take weeks.

The Germans are so good at thinking of new, improved ways to kill people.
