I agree that it is under compensated.

I assume whoever is teaching this child has had classes dealing with the handling of children with special needs? It is, as you know, legally required now that we mainstream most children since regular school is considered the least restrictive environment for most children. In California we are required to take special classes which focus on children with special needs and now we are all required to be CLAD credentialed so that we can teach in the multiethnic classroom. California has just added another technology class to the classes required to clear a credential as well. With greater compensation they might get more people interested in meeting their very high requirements (and expensive too).

In California there are now 4 clear courses on top of the 30 course units required for the credential- this is on top of any BA or graduate degree someone may have. California teachers must pass the CBEST, the RICA and the MSAT, for elementary school.

There is no such thing as "just price", including for labor. The market sets the price, with a degree of "wiggle room" for negotiation. If people are terribly dissatisfied with the teachers they are getting, they will increase base salaries to attract better people. If they are content, they will not........
