The important thing to remember is to be sure the dividend is safe. The second thing to do is to look at the possibility of stock price appreciation, which can be substantial in certain cases.

Let's face facts, the FED is telling us to invest, by keeping short term rates in the cellar.
There is simply no alternative, you have to have your money working, and the best place that I know of is stocks.
Some do real-estate, some do bonds. They all continue the circle of money.....

Thanks for the ERF idea, an 18% dividend. I like royalty trusts, and I am going to give them a call....
They could be a double gainer, based on what could happen to the mid-east crude fields.
This may be of interest, and I bought RD at the time because I liked the dividend, but the stock really ran from $40, so I didn't have to wait on the div.

HMT suspends dividend>>>

""Host Marriott Corp. of Bethesda said yesterday that it would not pay a dividend in the fourth quarter because of a significant drop in business since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The company said it could not estimate when it would reinstate the dividend.

Host Marriott also reported funds from operations -- a measure of real estate investment trusts' performance -- totaled $75 million for the quarter that ended Sept. 7, compared with $99 million in the same period a year earlier.

The company reported an overall loss of $7 million (6 cents per share), compared with a loss of $17 million (10 cents) in the third quarter of 2000.

Company officials said a slowdown in travel before the attacks combined with the dive the industry took after Sept. 11 forced it to suspend dividend payments on common stock. Real estate investment trusts pass most of their profit on to shareholders in the form of dividends.""

As I said, you have to be sure the dividend is secure.
HMT's evidently wasn't...and casts a dim light on all REIT's..

BTW, OLN has had a nice 2 day move on an upgrade from the Wall Street morons..
