No 2 mainland mobile carrier China Unicom said on
Wednesday it expected its portion of the code division
multiple access (CDMA) mobile network being built by
its parent to be 70 per cent utilised in its first year of
operation.

"The listed company will lease a capacity of nine million
customers. If things go right, we expect a utilisation rate
of more than 70 per cent in the first year," Tan XingHui,
executive director and vice-president, said in an
interview.

That would give the company about seven million
users on the CDMA network.

Hong Kong-listed China Unicom, which plans to lease
CDMA network capacity from its parent, had 22.116
million subscribers on its global standard for mobile
communication (GSM) network in 12 provinces as of
late August.

Earlier this year, China Unicom's state-backed parent
opted to build a nationwide network using the
US-developed CDMA technology after repeated delays.
The first phase of the new network is set to be
completed by the end of this year or early next year.

China recently surpassed the United States as the
world's largest mobile phone market.

Mr Tan said CDMA would be targeted towards mid- to
high-usage customers and the network would be
upgraded to higher-speed 2.5 generation capability
beginning in the middle of next year.

He said the company's CDMA service might be priced at
a premium to its GSM service, which is roughly 10 per
cent cheaper than the GSM service offered by rival
China Mobile (Hong Kong).

DH - Think of top IBs but pls don't ask for the precise name. By business I mean the sudden and massive deal flow or what they know is coming to them all of a sudden.

Not talking retail stock selling.

Best,
