Naipaul wins the Nobel prize in literature The report says that the academy singled out "The Enigma of Arrival" as outstanding. He studied Muslim fundamentalism in non-Arab countries like Iran, Indonesia, Pakistan and Malaysia. His writings were deemed as perceptive and incorruptible. The timing is interesting.

The Mayor and the prince The Mayor of the New York City respectfully declines to accept the $10 million from a Saudi prince for his tilt. But the president feels that he is satisfied with the cooperation extended by the Saudis. It is apparent that the president is determined to tear up the evil network. He is applying diplomatic and economic pressures and anything else that goes, on countries harboring terrorist outfits. Some countries may not cooperate to the extent the US wants because of special problems they have in their countries. For example the network runs protection racket and big businesses would rather pay up than to tangle with them. It is cheaper and safer and the money is written off as business expense. Any Govt. crackdown may mean trouble to the Govt.'s stability. What about all the money taken by the network as contributions from individuals for causes which they don't even know? How does the respective country or US prevent that money going to support the network. What about all the whole sale and retail honey merchants whose profits go to support the network? I understand smuggling weapons in the crates with broken honey bottles throws the dogs and the custom inspectors off because the stuff is gooey and the inspectors don't want to handle it. Middle east people are the biggest honeyeaters. Why are they eating that gooey stuff laced with pollen and vomited by the bees? The banks have been asked to freeze the assets of the network members. But Hawala system is beyond official inspection and elimination. The system works as follows. There are 4 parties and two kinds of currencies to make hawala work. The sender, the recipient, the sender-agent and the recipient agent are the parties. The sender goes to the sender-agent and hands him local currency (plus commission) to be sent to the recipient in another country. From the agent, the sender gets a code of characters on a scrap of paper to be sent to the receiver. The sender agent sends a fax or a message to the recipient agent in code language the code and amount of money to given to the bearer of the code. The bearer shows the code and gets the money in the local currency in the receiving country. The system is run on the commission and the fluctuations in exchange rates. Once the transaction is finished all the records are destroyed on both ends. This money can never be traced, accounted for or frozen. The agents neither know or want to know the names of the customers.
