The attacks truly assaulted our self perception too.

As Americans, it seems to me that we do have a kind of prom king/prom queen self-conception. No matter how we reallylook (in truth and/or in the eyes of the world) when we look in the mirror, we see glistening white smiles, sweet and handsome countenances, and healthy heads of hair, upon which our crowns rest. That's the picture we paint of ourselves and it has become a metaphoric illusion we cherish.

We're the heroes--everyone else can be the bad guys but us. We're always the singing cowboys, they're the marauding indians, we're the Dudley Dorights, and they're . . . whoever the hell Dudley's arch nemesis was.

To have someone sneak up and stab us while our prom outfits were still pressed and shiny was not only devilish, and criminal, but so friggin surprising, that we just can't quite wrap our brains around the offense.
