No, they were imperialistic at that point, which involved a whole set of other evils. I can't say that if I saw the Euro's coming, I wouldn't be running for cover at the time (and maybe the xenophobia was justified). Many countries in Europe are reeling now because of immigration and challenges to their long-standing senses of self-identity. What the U.S. is experiencing isn't unique. Heck, the U.S. has always had waves of anti-immigrant rushes periodically. Our survival has been due the relative success of accomodating these influxes.
