That doesn't seem to jibe with what you were originally saying, which is when I joined this fray. Earlier you said:
There is a prevailing cultural tradition in the United States. It is European and Christian. All others are welcome but if they want to tell me not to say "God Bless America" or want to ditch Christmas carols, they can bite me.

Do you see the contradiction in referring a notion of others accepting your prevailing culture in one post and then talking about assimilation in another?

At some level, even the finest alloy is ultimately a mosaic at the atomic level. The better and more regular the mosaic, the better the melt. You simply can't expect to absorb people without the 'melt' affecting you as well as them. Consider such distinctly American dishes such as pizza and chop suey. They were derivative of other cultures but went on to become part of the dominant culture. Mixing involves changes in both the solvent and the solute.

The trend away from bi-lingual education is essential, IMO.

If it was true bi-lingual education I would not have a problem with it but too often it is teaching people in their old language (usually Spanish) and not effectively teaching them English. Without a solid background in speaking and writing English the kids are put at a disadvantage when they grow up and have to support themselves in the real world.
