They were making money hand-over-fist with that and were laying people off prior to the disaster anyway.

Poor equation, but they were cutting back anyway. Trading bonds on that system was like trading stocks on Instinet. They had the technology locked. The people they employed were redundant. Cantor had been firing, and probably would have continued to do so.

I know it sounds harsh but that is probably what they would have done, disaster or no disaster.
