I understand, and share, your anger at the Taliban and bin Laden, but respectfully suggest that Afghanistan isn't a "rathole."

It's a nexus, where a number of cultures meet, due to geography, and places like that are often the site of conflict - see, e.g., Israel and the Balkans.

It would be a good place, in theory, to put a transcontinental oil pipeline. In practice, probably not.
