What's fascinating is that Bellesiles could have written the history of guns, the history of the death penalty or the history of abortion and Times would have praised it before publication. Such is the legacy of ignorance on the left.

Expect some other lefty to step up with a book that "proves" Bellesiles's work was flawed but his premise was correct. Expect NYT to praise it. He who controls the past controls the future.

Even if they can't, the idea has been planted that the time honored image of armed settlers is a myth, and it will gain a life of its own.

Bellesiles must have a drug problem.
