Survey Results Indicate Vast Market Potential for Data Mobility Services
Recent Research from fusionOne and Ovum Show Nearly 20 Million Potential
Paying U.S. Customers for Data Mobility Services in 2001
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 11, 2001-- Results released today
by fusionOne reveal that the majority of mobile users in the United States would
be willing to pay for data mobility services, according to a new survey conducted
by independent research company, Ovum. The results indicate a potential market
of nearly 20 million users, and possible annual revenue of more than $350 million
for mobile operators offering data mobility, or synchronization services as a
``value-add'' to existing users.

The first ever end-user research in data mobility services was commissioned by
fusionOne, a pioneer and leader in sync and mobility infrastructure, in order to
define the needs and expectations of mobile users. The research, carried out by
Ovum, took place over three months with respondents in the United States as well
as the United Kingdom and Sweden.

Highlights of the results revealed for the first time include:

63 percent of U.S. respondents would pay for data mobility services such as
synchronization
26 percent of U.S. respondents spent more than 50 percent of their time away
from the office
Data mobility solutions such as synchronization were seen as a ``positive
addition'' to existing solutions
Security and speed were considered to be the main concerns regarding data
mobility services
Summing up the results of the survey, David Bradshaw, vice president of
consulting for Ovum in North America, said, ``Sync serves a real need, it is
capable of attracting a real audience and it promises real revenues for wireless
carriers.''

The study carried out by Ovum involved focus groups and telephone interviews
with a statistically significant sample size of highly mobile business executives in
each of the three countries. Respondents were professionals, typically
sales/marketing or professional services managers, who spent at least 20
percent of their working time away from the office and used both a laptop
computer and a mobile phone.

``It is crucial that all businesses operating in the mobile data marketplace
understand what end-users are looking for from mobile services and, equally
importantly, what they are prepared to pay for these services,'' said Rick Onyon,
president and chief executive officer for fusionOne. ``This research by Ovum
demonstrates that mobile operators can maximize revenue and better serve their
customers' needs by offering synchronization services.''
