Good luck. I went cliff climbing one time. The guy I was with said we'd just go up a little way. Unfortunately we got to a point where the only way to go was up. It turned out to be an intermediate to difficult level climb. At one point there was a place where I was on a vertical cliff looking staight down on about 300ft. The only way up was to reach above and behind me and grab a ledge with one hand and then swing out into open space and grab with the other hand. I've never gone rock climbing again and I never will. The thrill of doing something that pumps you up because at any second you could be enjoying a short flight with a hard landing is a thrill I am happy to miss. g. I have rappelled and it's fun but once again you should ask yourself what the thrill is. On the issue of weeding people out for special forces, I agree that you need mental toughness. I think that you will agree, however, that if you require people to run a mile in about 5 1/2 minutes with a 60 lb pack on their back as a requirement for the program you will weed out a great number of people who are mentally tough but not genetically blessed with the physical size and ability to perform that task. My point was that you should test for things that are more important in dealing with the complexities of real combat situations and get rid of the macho crap that only perpetuates myths. I'm not saying that you shouldn't choose people who are physically capable, I'm only saying that if I had to choose between a little wimpy guy with a clever mind and a big athletic guy with a less clever mind and both were mentally tough, I think I want that little guy next to me. And no, I'm not saying that because I'm a little wimpy guy. I'm saying that because I know that the mind is the greatest tool in complex and mercurical situations and if combat is anything, it is that. Ed
