I agree ... then we leave them alone to kill each other instead of exporting all their problems over to us.

I agree that the military battle will only be the first part, and economic and social reconstruction the most important.

The US has been the largest provider of economic and humanitarian assistance to the undeveloped world.

But this time around, I want us to have some say as to who gets what, and how to limit, or prevent the traditional corruption that dilutes the effectiveness of such assistance.

We're probably not going to be liked by many of the powerful elements in this world as a result of this policy.. But so be it. They can't manage their affairs and create the economic conditions conducive to peace and democracy, so someone has to do it...

We've learned that when we try and appease corrupt elements in these societies and treat them like they are legitimate governments, we get screwed just as badly as they screw their own people.

That's how I'm feeling right now... and I don't know if such a feeling will find acceptance among the rest of the American people, or even if there is sufficient determination to walk that long and winding road.

Call this ideological imperialism, but most of us realize that free nations can only truly be free when they are not afraid.

While not personally in a panic over all of this, I'm certainly less comfortable and secure than I was before September 11th.. And I don't care who's butt we have to kick in order to get us back to the security and comfort we once possessed.
