More complicated with sports stars. Owners are able to pay the high salaries because they receive big tax payer subsidies to build the stadia they play in.

Putting Jack Welch or Michael Eisner in the same arena (pun intended) as Michael Jordan is a stretch. You have bought into the notion of pop culture too much. Tying million-dollar CEO bonuses to share price is also often a bad idea because of the ease at which share prices can be inflated via accounting tricks and one-time gains. Also, such tactics can cause lasting harm with analysts ... and to the company itself.
