...China/India should contribute an extra 7-8m handsets

Thanks for your take.

My take is that if we do 75MM CDMA units this year, "robust" growth for '02 will be a projection of at least 90MM (especially in the current economic environment).

I liken the prospects for worldwide CDMA sales growth to new retail chains (like GAP, CrispyCreme, Starbucks, etc.). You can get increases from y-o-y growth in existing stores and from new stores.

For QCOM existing stores means to me current SPs and normal growth. New stores mainly means new SPs (switches like may be happening with LA TDMA providers), or extraordinary growth from existing SPs.

I think to do 90MM in '02 we will need to see more "new stores" beyond India/China. Announced LA switches to 1X to happen in '02 is a good one. Another "new store" you did not mention is Virgin, since they are targeting a "new" market for CDMA in the US.

the real driver is going to have to be 1x demand. - I completely agree. Many are focused on China and other new markets for growth in '02. I certainly wouldn't want to discount this growth, but I believe far more growth in '02 will come from the replacement cycle. Many, like me have been waiting for a reason to replace a perfectly good handset. 1x phones with all the new features should provide that reason.

Look for replacement handset numbers to be huge next year vs. '01.
