Japan is very different: as an island nation, it has clear natural boundaries, and this also gave it considerable natural protection. It was seen by its inhabitants as a nation for centuries, and since the main original influxes never colonised - even after military defeat; certainly it hasn't been ruled (in the governmental sense) from abroad, however dominant Chinese influences may have been.

So I wouldn't class it at all with post-colonial states - even disregarding that it was an imperialist power itself, for a time...
