You need to read more than just the first definition, or get a better dictionary:

an·ec·dot·al (nk-dtl)
adj.

1.also an·ec·dot·ic (-dtk) or an·ec·dot·i·cal (--kl) Of, characterized by, or full of anecdotes.
2.Based on casual observations or indications rather than rigorous or scientific analysis: “There are anecdotal reports of children
poisoned by hot dogs roasted over a fire of the [oleander] stems” (C. Claiborne Ray).

The "real" world. What a concept. How real is the world you perceive as real? And how well would that world correspond to the world of someone else? The world does not grow better for everyone. Lots of people are worse off in the world, in other countries, for example. Are you in touch with that reality? The world here is much worse for people in prison, than it once was- and we are locking up a sizeable proportion of our population (a much greater proportion than in years past) for silly victimless drug crimes. What do you think of that reality?

I am not sure there is a forward and upward when it comes to humans. There were Greeks who, imo, were as humane and intelligent as any men today (although even those attributes I have trouble labeling "forward" and "upward"), and between them and me there are oceans of people who embraced violence and ignorance. There will always be oceans of those people, I think. Of course humans may evolve, or become part cybernetic- but I still have trouble using words like "upward" and "forward". Those are such valued laden words. And I've no idea what you mean by them.
