Niceguy,

I am very much on your side. I think it was an incredible success for AMD to gain back the performance crown so convincingly. Even one year after the introduction of the P4 AMD is still ahead in the performance field. I believe that very few people had previously thought that this would be possible.

If the rumors are true that Northwood will be delayed until early next year this would mark another very important image win for AMD. It would mean that - despite all predictions of the contrary - for the third year in a row AMD has the superior product offering during the very important Christmas selling season (1999 the Coppermines were almost non-existing, 2000 the Athlon 1200 was faster than the P4 1500 in most benchmarks, now the Athlon XP 1800+ clearly beats the P4 2000).

OTOH I believe that Intel can hide the extent of this disaster during the forthcoming CC since OEMs had built P4+i845 systems like crazy in anticipation of the promised super strong consumer demand. So Intel will indeed be able to claim that P4 sales are flying. The big question mark, however, is sell-through. I am ready to bet (and I do so by being fully invested in AMD again) that P4+SDRAM systems will by far not be as well accepted by the consumers as Intel and all the OEMs have projected. This, however, will only be apparent when it comes to Q4 numbers. Therefore I do expect some very strong data and words in the next Intel CC.
