The discovery of oil is handled incredibly well in Yergin's "The Prize," which is an incredible tale.
King Ibn Saud wanted to find water; he was deep in debt and thought water might help him out.

Funny you should mention "The Prize". It was sitting on my bookshelf for a couple of years while I thought about that intimidating page count. Finally started it about a week ago. An amazing story and I hope to be done by 2003.

Thats another thing that pisses me off about the Saudis. This guy conquers Arabia and renames it Saudi Arabia and the world accepts it. Heard a funny analogy to that once. If a family named Hutchison conquered Canada and renamed it Hutchison Canada, would the world accept that?

You asked me O/L where I started buying MDR. I had a previous large position that I sold piece-meal from $12 - 14. When it started to tank, I bailed on the rest in the mid-11's. I started nibbling again in the low 10's and some more in the mid-9's. When it continued to slide, I backed off and was amazed as it slid to the mid 7's again where I really loaded up. FWIW, probably nothing.
