First Kazakh-Russia CPC oil being shipped

MOSCOW - The first oil is being loaded at port from the new
Kazakhstan-Russia pipeline, built by the Caspian Pipeline Consortium
(CPC), after several months of delay, an oil industry source said on
Monday.

The source, who declined to be identified, said a tanker was already being
loaded with oil from the $2.5-billion pipeline at the Russian Black Sea port
of Novorossiisk.

The 1,580-km (980-mile) pipeline, from Kazakhstan's giant Tengiz oilfield,
had originally planned to open in June, but customs and technical problems
caused a delay.

A formal announcement about the first oil being shipped is expected to be
made at an 0800 GMT news conference by U.S. Commerce Secretary Don
Evans, visiting Moscow with a delegation of U.S. businessmen. The news
conference will also be attended by the head of the CPC group and other
top officials.

CPC is led by U.S. oil major Chevron . It unites the governments of Russia,
Kazakhstan and Oman as well as Russia's LUKOIL and other top oil
companies. /Reuters/
