Jim P, interesting story about Pershing in the Phillipines.

Another story from the same time period deals with the advent of the colt .45 automatic pistol.

It seems that fanatics on the islands were charging the armed forces, and the soldiers were finding that their rifle bullets while lethal were not always quite enough to stop an adrenaline pumped charging native from reaching the lines.

The call went out for an automatic weapon with undeniable stopping power, and the famous colt model 1991 .45 was invented.

jim_p -- do you have a source? Here in Atlanta, our local talk radio guy told a comparable story but with General Perceval in WWI Europe.....
