Who said anything about 'taxing people out of their cars'? I'm for COST EFFECTIVE measures.

Even Daimler/Chrysler and Ford (variously) predict "the death of the internal combustion engine" (replaced by much more efficient fuel cells) between 2016 and 2020.

They are certainly not planning on stopping the manufacture of cars! And I think their credibility on energy issues may be a little better than our government's... which hasn't done much in 20 years to reduce our strategic vulnerability to foreign oil - unless you count sticking their heads in the sand and vainly trying to prop up dictators.
