Something doesn't quite jive about this account. I can understand why Sharon wanted to grandstand. I can understand why Barak wanted Sharon as an opponent rather than Netanyahu, so was willing to help him grandstand.

But there was no possible benefit to Barak in an explosion of violence, quite the reverse, which is why I believe Barak when he says that Arafat and the PA officials assured him that they could keep control of the situation if Sharon visited the Temple Mount. This is also why the Israelis remain convinced that the intifada was planned in advance, and Sharon's visit was used as a pretext. A later statement by the PA Minister of Communications also confirmed this.
