Qualcomm (QCOM-$50-SB-V) Putting it All Together; MSM5100 Production Commences
Louis Gerhardy

--Multiple innovations converge into the MSM5100 - Yesterday QCOM announced production shipment of its full-featured 3G (CDMA2000 1x) chipset and software. We expect this integrated circuit (IC) to serve as a major revenue catalyst in the next several years. The MSM5100 should drive QCOM's ASP higher and drive unit demand higher by attracting new customers and firming-up replacement handset demand.

--This new IC represents the on-time delivery of the next phase in the CDMA2000 family; 307kbps data transmission speeds, global positioning system, Bluetooth, MP3, Compact Media Extension Musical Instrument Digital Interface, and support for BREW (QCOM's technology that allows executable applications to be downloaded into a handset).

--A major 3G milestone - The extremely high level of integration is unmatched for a 3G IC and highlights the scalability of CDMA2000 technology and superior execution in QCOM's semi division. The adoption of new technologies (e.g. GPS or Bluetooth) is facilitated by the high level of integration that result in lower costs, lower power consumption, and smaller and lighter handsets. We believe QCOM can offer similar levels of integration for the WCDMA market but we don't expect these ICs to be introduced until operators move farther down the WCDMA learning curve and volume deployment plans are firmly established (currently estimated in C2003/C2004).

--CDMA handset companies and US service providers have indicated to us that they are anxious to get the MSM5100 based product and they expect handsets based on the IC to become the standard CDMA handset in N. America by C2H02. QCOM indicated more than 50 MSM5100 products are in development with initial launches by the end of C2001. In comparison, 43 handset and modem designs are currently being implemented for QCOM's MSM5105 3G chipset that has been in mass
